The Department for Sampling and Sample Preparation carries out the sampling of materials in solid and liquid state, as well as the preparation of samples for the needs of testing. Sampling of solid and bulk materials of various size classes is carried out by the manual methods, using the probes and other supporting material.
Preparation of samples for the needs of chemical testing consists of fragmentation operation, mass shortening and homogenization. Material fragmentation, depending on a grain size, can be done on:
- laboratory jaw crushers, where the materials such as ore, rocks, slag, geological cores of size class up to 140 mm are crushed to the size class of 3-5 mm;
- laboratory ring and disc mills, where the materials of size class to 20 mm are ground to the size class less than 50 µm.
