Environmental Protection and Education in Ecological
Engineering – EPEEE, 2025
On June 5th, 2025, the World Environment Day, the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnologies and Environmental Protection (Politehnica University Timisoara) organized the 18th edition of the national symposium entitled Environmental Protection and Education in Ecological Engineering – EPEEE.
The event is an opportunity to focus the attention of students, teachers, researchers, non-profit organizations, companies and decision-makers, on the essential aspects aimed at environmental protection, which contributes to improving the quality of the environment and the health of people, fauna and flora.
In the plenary section, Assoc. prof. Cornelia Muntean presented aspects related to the topic of the symposium found during managing the project RORS-308 “Forming of network for enhancing environmental protection from pollutants of mining cross border areas”, financed within the framework of the Interreg-IPA Cross-border Cooperation Romania-Serbia Programme.
NETMIN project – an example of ecological cooperation in times of crisis
Timisoara recently hosted the anniversary event marking 35 of Interreg programs, funded by the Serbian cross-border collaboration. The ceremony was hosted by the Multifunctional Hall of the Timiș County Council and brought together over 100 representatives of central and local institutions from Romania and Serbia, including H.E. Silvia Davidoiu, Ambassador of Romania to Serbia, H.E. Ivana Jakšić Matović, Consul General of the Republic of Serbia in Timișoara, and Mr. Gabriel Ghilea, Undersecretary of State within the Ministry of Development, Public Works and Administration. The speakers highlighted, with concrete examples, the fact that funding through Interreg programmes has led to improved infrastructure, better cross-border connectivity, institutional cooperation and the strengthening of neighbourhood relations between Romania and Serbia. During this event, 21 major impact projects were awarded in fields such as cross-border connectivity, protection of cultural heritage, health and community safety. Among them, distinguished with a diploma for “cooperation in emergency situations and green impact”, stands the project “Forming of network for enhancing environmental protection from pollutants of mining cross border areas”, acronym NETMIN, eMS no. RORS-308, implemented within the Interreg-IPA Romania-Serbia Cross-Border Cooperation Programme by Politehnica University of Timisoara (Romania) and the Bor Institute for Mining and Metallurgy Bor (Serbia). The project was carried out, for the most part, under the emergency conditions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, which imposed lockdown, travel restrictions and social distancing, but for which the NETMIN-RORS-308 project team identified innovative ways of implementation, continuing the research, education and information activities. The research carried out through the project led to the identification of green solutions for greening the land affected by pollution due to mining activities, providing local communities with the necessary data for an integrated approach to environmental protection. The diploma handed over by the organizers to the project coordinator, assoc. prof. dr. eng. Cornelia Muntean attests that NETMIN is an exceptional example of a cross-border partnership oriented towards the sustainable and safe development of communities.
Sustainability of the NETMIN RORS-308 Project
The NETMIN RORS-308 project, “Forming of network for enhancing environmental protection from pollutants of mining cross border areas”, co-financed by the Interreg IPA Romania-Serbia Cross-Border Cooperation Programme was developed and implemented by Politehnica University Timisoara (Lead Partner) and the Mining and Metallurgy Institute Bor (Project Partner).
In December 2025, the project partners held an on-line sustainability meeting aimed at reviewing the sustainability of the project results and assessing the continuity of cooperation between the two institutions after the completion of the project.
The meeting addressed the activities conducted since the previous sustainability meeting and evaluated the entire five-year sustainability period (2020-2025). During this period, the partners ensured the long-term use and promotion of project results through regular communication and coordination meetings, joint participation with common presentations at national and international conferences and workshops, continuous training of staff in the use of the equipment procured within the project, and the expansion of the professional and institutional network established during project implementation.
The effectiveness and durability of the partnership developed under the RORS-308 project are further demonstrated by the successful initiation and implementation of a new Romania-Serbia cross-border cooperation project, RORS00063, thus ensuring the continuity of cooperation and capitalization of results.
In addition, future cooperation opportunities and the update of the partners’ websites were discussed, with the objective of maintaining visibility, transparency, and accessibility of project results in line with Interreg sustainability and communication requirements.
The meeting was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cornelia Muntean, Project Manager (Politehnica University Timisoara), Dr. Daniel Kržanović, Partner Manager (Mining and Metallurgy Institute Bor), and Dr. Ana Kostov, Public Relations Coordinator (MMI Bor).
